Political Peacocks

Watching the political peacocks "grilling" the Goldman Sachs crew yesterday, I couldn't help but think of Claude Rains in Casablanca and this particular scene.  If you know Casablanca, you know the correlations.

Utah Bicycling Adventures

A couple of weeks ago for spring break I went down to southern Utah to visit family, enjoy the riding and do a bit of dry farming.  Here's a few photos.   I took my road bike because I seem to be more in the mood for road riding lately and it's gorgeous to sweep through the red rock on the road.  I've ridden my cross bike off road down there before but perhaps next time I'll take the FS rig and do the Guacomole trail (see vid).  The trail is adjacent to Zion and to get to it you have to go through land that my in-laws own (see photos of  the dry farm and my tractor skills).   All in all a wonderful, but short, trip.  Next week a full Ironman is being staged down in the area so there were tons of cyclists out on the road when I went out.   Should be a fun event.

Through Snow Canyon.

The dry farm...should be a good year for watermelon and the nut trees!

Follow the road and you will get to the guacamole trail.

There's An App For That?

I'm guessing Steve Jobs didn't anticipate this application for the iPad.  Or, maybe he did.  He's a pretty smart fellow.   I'm curious how the "trigger" for the various signals would work for a cyclist when he or she is signaling a turn or a stop.

Yeah, those are members of Radiohead playing with Neil Finn.

2010 Truckee Meadows Bike Map

View RTC Bike Map Proj in a larger map

I've been a bit remiss in not posting about the unveiling of the new RTC Bike map that was presented at our last Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.  These kinds of projects are always a work in progress but I'm pretty proud of the final product.  No doubt there will be naysayers but it's nice to have a final map to hold in your hand after over a year of meetings and pulling together of resources with the folks from the RTC.  Copies are available  at these locations and an online interactive versions is HERE and a pdf HERE.

  • We Should Pay More Taxes!

Love and hate this breakdown of where our taxes go.  Two percent for education?  Where's the outrage over that?  And where was the outrage from the so-called tea party when the Bush II administration was running up huge military debt for Iraq?  Or when Cheney said "deficits don't matter"?

Turds for Gold - Chrome Does Good

When I first heard about Chrome's "Turds for Gold" campaign I thought it was probably an urban legend but I happened to have a pair of old shoes in my locker at work and a conveniently sized box to plop them into the mail.  Lo and behold yesterday I received my free (if you don't count the shipping for the old shoes that I donated) pair of Chrome shoes.  Nicely made and urban chic design and most importantly, very comfy!  Kudos to Chrome for organizing this shoe drive to aid "those in need on the streets of San Francisco...and in Haiti through Soles4Souls!"  It's not every day that you get a free pair of $90 shoes.

Wednesday Night Pick Me Up - Goldfrapp

Goldfrapp has gone from Electrocool, to Glampop, to Kate Bush, and now to '80s dance and I still love her.  Here's one of my favorites:

    Seriously...Where's Spring!?!

I swear I'm planning a trip to Death Valley to ride in some 80 degree weather next week during Spring Break if the weather doesn't improve.

    Suffer No Fools Day!

Take April 1 seriously. We are declaring that day to be “Suffer No Fools Day” and people around the world can do what they will to make it a day for education for all. Make posters, bumper stickers, tee-shirts, hire sky writers, drape buildings with banners, house parties, donate a dollar thingamabobs, whatever. Spare No Fools Day: Free schools, free education. Spare No Fools Day: It Makes sense! Take a minute today, write a note and send it to those on your e-mail lists, your face-book and my-space pages, twitter, whatever. Just do something and put in a word for a Spare No Fools Day. I am going to send this to friends in education made in Nigeria and Costa Rica. Somebody want to write a song? Design a logo? Offer up tag lines? Inform the media?

    Critical Mass This Friday!
